Yes, on a Toyota or Lexus full hybrid you can read the condition of the traction battery yourself before buying. You need a good OBD Bluetooth adapter, a free app and ten minutes. You repair nothing and take nothing apart: you read the voltages the control unit already measures. On a Kia or a Hyundai, it is another story.
Can you really test a hybrid battery yourself?
You can read it. Testing it the way a workshop does, with a controlled load and an internal resistance measurement module by module, is a different job.
The traction battery of a Toyota full hybrid is split into blocks, each grouping several cells. The battery control unit measures the voltage of every block all the time, to balance the charge and switch on a warning light when one of them drops out. Those values come out through the OBD socket, the one under the steering wheel. An app displays them.
I did this hundreds of times at the dealership, with the Toyota tool. A phone app shows less, but it shows the essential: whether the blocks are ageing together or one of them is pulling ahead.
What equipment do you need, and what does it cost?
An adapter and an app. Your phone does the rest.
| Item | Example | Price found | Platforms | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Bluetooth adapter | OBDLink LX | €99.95 on bol.com (18/10/2026); $89.95 from the maker | Android, Windows | Stated sleep draw 2 mA |
| Bluetooth Low Energy adapter | OBDLink MX+ | $139.95 from the maker (18/10/2026), Belgian price not checked | iOS, Android, Windows | Needed on iPhone |
| Reading app | Dr. Prius / Dr. Hybrid | Free, in-app purchases (amounts not shown) | iOS, Android | Life expectancy test, printable certificate |
| Reading app | Hybrid Assistant | Free | Android | Developer HybridXplorers |
| General app | Car Scanner | Free, Pro version around $5 | iOS, Android | Cell voltages and state of health stated on Toyota hybrids |
| Workshop tablet | Autel MaxiSys MS909EV | Price not published | Dedicated tablet | For garages, state of health stated mainly for EVs |
How long a reading takes: ten minutes parked, about twenty if you add a drive. Workshop tablets from Autel or Launch do more, but they target garages, at prices not shown to the public. For a single car, they are not a purchase.
The main trap is the adapter. The Dr. Prius App Store listing warns that most cheap ELM327 clones will not work. A presentation of Hybrid Assistant published on 17 January 2022 reserves full functionality on recent Toyotas for OBDLink and vLinker FD or MC adapters. On 18 October 2026, the OBDLink LX was listed at €99.95 on bol.com, sold by OBD-Partner.
Which app for which hybrid?
Which of the three architectures do you drive? The answer decides what an app will be able to read.
A mild hybrid (MHEV) has a small 12 or 48 V battery that these apps do not target. A Toyota or Lexus full hybrid (HEV) is their home ground: Dr. Prius and Hybrid Assistant each publish a model list, and a 2022 presentation of Hybrid Assistant includes the Yaris from model years 2012 to 2019 then 2020, and the Corolla 1.8 and 2.0. For a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), check the developer's list model year by model year before buying anything.
Two Toyotas common on the Belgian used market, with their figures:
- The Toyota Yaris hybrid (HEV) uses 4.81 l/100 km across 1,765 cars tracked on Spritmonitor (reading of 26 September 2026). Toyota Belgium warrants its hybrid battery for 5 years or 100,000 km, extended by one year after each passed test in the approved network, up to the car's 10th year.
- The Toyota Corolla hybrid (HEV) runs at 5.22 l/100 km across 1,573 cars (reading of 12 October 2026), with the same battery warranty.
How do you take the reading, step by step?
- Ask the seller's permission, and ask that the car has not been driven since the day before. A battery that has just charged hides weak blocks.
- Check the 12 V battery first. Below 12 V at rest, have it replaced or recharged before judging the traction battery: a tired 12 V distorts readings and triggers faults.
- Plug the adapter into the OBD socket, under the dashboard on the driver's side, then switch on in READY mode.
- Open the app, select the exact model and model year, and display the block voltages and the state of charge.
- Take a screenshot parked, then drive for ten minutes with two or three firm accelerations, and take another.
- Read the fault codes. Do not clear them: a code cleared before a sale is information the buyer loses.
- Unplug the adapter.
How do you read the block voltages?
Look at the gap, not the value. A ten-year-old battery can be healthy if all its blocks have aged at the same pace.
Jordan Hill, in a TOYOTAtech technical article from May 2022, gives the benchmarks I used too: on a healthy battery, the lowest and highest blocks stay within 0.3 or 0.4 V of each other. A block about 1.4 V below the others points to a shorted cell. And blocks alternating high and low, in a sawtooth pattern, point to the battery control unit rather than the battery itself.
The gap widens under load. That is why the screenshot after the drive counts for more than the one taken at rest.
The signs that should make you walk away, or demand a workshop diagnosis before signing:
- a gap above 0.5 V at rest that grows clearly after the accelerations;
- one block sitting well below all the others;
- a fault code in the P0A80 family, Toyota's hybrid battery replacement message;
- OBD readiness monitors reset to zero, a common sign of codes cleared just before the viewing;
- a state of charge that collapses within seconds of accelerating and climbs back just as fast.
The other way round, tight blocks guarantee nothing for the next five years. They say that today, the battery has no weak link.

Kia and Hyundai: go through the network
I found no consumer app that reads the battery of a Kia hybrid in a documented way. The Car Scanner review of 17 March 2026 limits its Hyundai support to one model.
The Kia Niro hybrid (HEV) uses 5.03 l/100 km (Spritmonitor, 26 September 2026), battery covered for 7 years or 150,000 km up to model year 2025, 8 years or 160,000 km after that. Ask for a diagnostic report from the network.
When you should buy nothing
If the Toyota is still within its 10 years and serviced at the dealer, ask for the latest report of the hybrid test carried out in the network. It is worth more than a car park reading, since the warranty depends on it.
Nothing in Belgium gives you this by default. The Car-Pass, which the seller must hand to the buyer according to the AutoScout24 Belgium guide, records the mileage and nothing else. And the roadworthiness test does not measure the hybrid drivetrain, as the article on the hybrid roadworthiness test explains.
Europe is opening a door. Since 18 August 2024, Article 14 of the EU Batteries Regulation 2023/1542 requires the management system of vehicle batteries, hybrids included, to hold the data that determine their state of health, and their lawful owner to be able to read it. In principle this only applies to batteries placed on the market since then, and nothing requires a phone app to be able to read that data.
If the reading reveals a weak block, the price of a new, reconditioned or repaired battery is detailed in the article on hybrid car battery costs. To compare other models, the ranking of hybrids sold in Belgium and the buying method give each one's architecture and battery cover.

Frequently asked questions
