If you take away one thing from this page: three very different cars are sold today under the word "hybrid", and they will not save you the same money. A mild hybrid (MHEV) never drives on electricity alone — it assists the combustion engine, nothing more. A full hybrid (HEV) drives on electricity in short bursts, mostly in town, and recharges under braking. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a large battery and a socket: plugged in every evening, it covers most daily trips without starting the engine; never plugged in, it burns more than the equivalent petrol car because it carries 200 kilos of unused battery. The gain sits around 5 to 10 % in urban use — real, but not remotely comparable to a full hybrid. The 48 V battery is small and inexpensive to replace, but its cover is markedly shorter than that of a traction battery. Good vehicle, wrong label.

How was this ranking built?

By elimination, starting with what a sales brochure does not show.

I first excluded any model whose architecture is not clearly documented by the manufacturer. This happens more often than you would think: "hybrid" appears on cars that carry only a 48-volt starter-generator and will never drive a single metre on electricity. They are not bad cars, but selling them as full hybrids is a misuse of language that costs the buyer real money.

I then ranked on three criteria, in this order: the maturity of the hybrid system (how many years the manufacturer has been building this architecture, and what published reliability surveys say), the actual term of the traction battery warranty, and finally the gap between homologated and observed fuel consumption. Price comes last. A model that is €2,000 cheaper but leaves you with an out-of-warranty battery at 90,000 km is not cheaper.

How much of the trip does a hybrid actually drive on electricity?

It depends entirely on the architecture, and it is the question nobody asks in the showroom.

A mild hybrid: none. The electric motor of an MHEV cannot propel the car on its own; it assists on pull-away, recovers a little energy under braking and lets the engine shut down at a standstill. The gain sits somewhere around 5 to 10 % of consumption in town, no more.

A full hybrid, in town, drives electrically in bursts of a few hundred metres whenever load is light and speed is low. Manufacturers quote proportions of time — not distance — often above half of an urban trip. That is plausible in a city centre with frequent stops; it collapses on a 90 km/h regional road and becomes marginal on the motorway, where the engine runs constantly.

A plug-in hybrid that has been charged covers a 30 km commute without ever starting the engine, as long as the battery holds and the heater does not eat the range. Left uncharged, it falls back to full-hybrid operation carrying a weight penalty.

Remember the simple rule: the shorter, slower and more stop-start your journey, the harder the hybrid works. The longer and faster it is, the less it helps.

Why does the quoted fuel figure never match yours?

Because the WLTP homologation procedure measures a plug-in hybrid with a full battery, then weights the result.

On a full hybrid, the gap between the homologated figure and everyday use stays moderate: expect roughly a tenth to a third more, more in winter and on the motorway. That is a normal gap, comparable to a petrol car.

On a plug-in hybrid, the gap is no longer comparable to anything. A figure of 1.1 l/100 km assumes the battery is full at the start and that the measurement cycle does not run far past its electric range. The same vehicle, battery empty, drinks like a heavy petrol car — because that is exactly what it has become. The ratio between the two situations can reach a factor of three to four. That is why I never quote a PHEV consumption figure without stating the state of the battery.

Cold adds its share. In a cold urban cycle, the engine of a full hybrid runs longer at start-up to reach temperature and feed the heater: the electric share drops mechanically over the first few kilometres.

How long does a traction battery last, and what does replacing it cost?

Longer than rumour says, but not as long as the car.

The traction battery of a full hybrid is small, never fully charged nor fully drained, and managed to last. Taxi fleets running Priuses have shown original batteries beyond 300,000 km. Outright failure is rare; what you see is a gradual loss of capacity, showing up as a shrinking electric share and fuel consumption creeping back up.

When replacement does become necessary, the order of magnitude in Belgium sits between €2,000 and €5,000 depending on the model, on whether a new manufacturer pack or a refurbished one is fitted, and on whether the workshop replaces the whole battery or only the failing modules. Belgian independent specialists offer refurbished packs at appreciably lower prices, with warranty terms that vary and need reading before you sign.

Hence the importance of the warranty line on each entry below. At Toyota, the annual hybrid health check carried out in the network extends battery cover year by year, up to ten years: that is a conditional commitment, not an automatic one. At Kia, seven years or 150,000 km apply with no network servicing condition. On mild hybrids, the 48 V battery is often treated as a wear item, with far shorter terms.

Full hybrid or plug-in hybrid?

The answer is a question about your home, not about the car: can you plug in every evening?

If you can, and if your daily trips fit inside the electric range, the plug-in is the only one of the three that will genuinely have you driving on electricity, with the engine as backup for long journeys. The purchase premium is recovered through fuel saved — provided you plug in.

If you cannot — a flat with no charge point, street parking, no safe socket — the plug-in hybrid is a bad buy. You are paying for a battery you carry without using. The full hybrid has nothing to plug in: it makes its own electricity as it drives. It is the default choice for most Belgian drivers.

The mild hybrid is a different trade-off altogether. It is not an electrified car, it is a slightly thriftier petrol car. Judge it as a petrol car, and compare its price to a petrol car.

What Belgian taxation changes in the calculation

A great deal, and not in the same direction depending on your region and your usage.

Registration tax and annual road tax are regional taxes: the scales, criteria and exemptions differ between Wallonia, the Brussels-Capital Region and Flanders. Flanders in particular calculates on environmental criteria that clearly favour low-emission powertrains, whereas the other two regions work mainly from fiscal horsepower. Two buyers of the same model, one in Namur and one in Ghent, do not pay the same amount.

For a company car the trade-off shifts again: tax deductibility and benefit-in-kind depend on homologated emissions, and plug-in hybrids long enjoyed a favourable regime that is progressively closing. This is a moving subject, to be checked when you order and not when you read an article.

So I give no tax figure here: it would be wrong for two thirds of readers. The useful rule is this — before signing, have your region's registration and road tax calculated for the exact version you are ordering, and ask the salesperson for that figure in writing.

Do you have to plug in a hybrid car?

Only if it is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Mild hybrids and full hybrids have no socket: they make their own electricity as they drive, from the combustion engine and from braking. The advertising term "self-charging" describes this normal behaviour; it does not name any particular technology.

Is a hybrid worth it if I mostly drive on the motorway?

Much less so. A hybrid's benefit comes from stopping, decelerating and low-speed phases. At steady motorway speed the engine runs continuously and the gap to a conventional petrol car narrows sharply. For a high-mileage motorway driver, the decision hinges more on the combustion engine itself.

What happens if the traction battery fails?

On a full hybrid the car usually enters limp mode or refuses to start: the combustion engine cannot run on its own, since the whole drivetrain is managed by the hybrid system. So it is not a fault you can ignore. A module-by-module diagnosis often allows only part of the pack to be replaced.

Does a hybrid need more servicing than a petrol car?

No, less on some items. Regenerative braking spares the pads, which often last far longer, and a full hybrid has neither a clutch nor a conventional alternator. On the other hand servicing must be done by a workshop trained on high-voltage systems, and at some manufacturers it is the condition for extending the battery warranty.

Can an independent garage service a hybrid?

Yes, provided the workshop is qualified to work on high-voltage circuits. One caution: if your battery warranty is extended year by year on condition of a check carried out in the manufacturer's network, servicing outside that network can cost you the extension.
