Registration tax on a hybrid car in Belgium

Registration tax (TMC/BIV) on a mild, full or plug-in hybrid in Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders: the hybrid coefficient, the certificate boxes to read and amounts calculated for three models on 30 September 2026.

Yes, a hybrid car pays registration tax in all three Belgian regions, and the amount depends on the architecture as much as on your address. On the three models I calculated on 30 September 2026, the bill ranges from 50 to 266 euros. No region looks at electric power. And the most frugal car at the pump is not always the least taxed.

How much is the registration tax on a new hybrid?

Not much, compared with the price of the car. But the gap between regions and between architectures is surprising, because each region taxes something different. I took three hybrids this site already follows, one per architecture, and ran their spec sheet data through the scales in force since 1 July 2026, for a new registration.

The three cars, with the site's rule:

  • the Suzuki Swift 1.2 Dualjet Hybrid, a 12 V mild hybrid (MHEV): 5.34 l/100 km recorded on 161 cars (Spritmonitor, 26 September 2026), Suzuki Belgium warranty of 7 years or 150,000 km with no separate line for the battery;
  • the Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid, a full hybrid (HEV): 5.22 l/100 km on 1,568 cars (Spritmonitor, 29 September 2026), battery covered for 5 years or 100,000 km, extendable up to 10 years in the approved network;
  • the Kia Niro 1.6 GDi PHEV, a plug-in hybrid: 2.87 l/100 km across 309 drivers (Spritmonitor, 26 September 2026), mixing full-battery and empty-battery trips, electricity not counted; battery covered for 7 years or 150,000 km before 2026, 8 years or 160,000 km after.

What is the registration tax on a hybrid in Wallonia?

Since 1 July 2025, Wallonia no longer taxes power alone. SPW Finances multiplies a base amount, set per kW band and reduced with age, by CO2 divided by 136, the maximum mass divided by 1,838, and an energy coefficient. That coefficient is 1 for a petrol car and 0.8 for a hybrid. The result never falls below 50 euros and never exceeds 9,000 euros.

For the Corolla, that gives a base of 128.02 euros (71 to 85 kW band), multiplied by 100/136, by 1,820/1,838 and by 0.8: 74.57 euros. The same car counted as a petrol would pay 93.21 euros. The hybrid coefficient saves you 18.64 euros, once. It will not decide your purchase.

SPW says so on its page on hybrid cars: the combustion engine's data are what count. Large families and single-parent families can also get up to 250 euros off registrations made since 1 July 2026.

Why does a plug-in hybrid land on the floor?

Because its type-approved CO2 is tiny, and Wallonia and Flanders both put it at the heart of the calculation. At 19 g/km, the plug-in Niro comes out at 15.51 euros in Wallonia before the floor, so 50 euros.

I have distrusted that 19 g/km figure for years. It assumes a battery that is charged all the time, which the 309 Niro records partly contradict. The Euro 6e-bis standard, mandatory for every new plug-in hybrid registered since 1 January 2026, partly corrects that bias: the calculation assumes a smaller electric share, and the stated CO2 goes up. On registration tax the effect stays at zero for a compact car: at 54 g/km the Niro would come out at 44.09 euros in Wallonia, still below the floor.

Brussels: power and nothing else

Brussels did not follow the Walloon reform. Registration tax there is still calculated on two grids, one in fiscal horsepower and one in the combustion engine's kW, and the higher amount applies. CO2 plays no part, nor does the energy type, except for electric cars, which pay the minimum.

The result: the plug-in Niro pays exactly what the Corolla pays in Brussels, about 158 euros, because both fall in the 9 to 10 hp or 71 to 85 kW band. The Swift, at 7 hp and 61 kW, stays at the bottom of the grid, around 79 euros. The rates indexed on 1 July 2026 are on the Brussels road tax page, which links to MyTax.

How does Flanders tax a hybrid?

Almost entirely on CO2. The Vlaamse Belastingdienst raises CO2, corrected by an annual factor (1.245 in 2026), to the sixth power, then adds a constant linked to fuel and Euro standard, 28.54 euros for a Euro 6 petrol car. The minimum is 58.16 euros.

The sixth power makes the formula harsh. The Swift, a mild hybrid at 121 g/km, pays 265.86 euros. The Corolla, at 100 g/km, pays 104.16. Twenty-one grams apart, two and a half times the tax. It is the only place in the country where the architecture really weighs on registration tax, and the mild hybrid is the loser.

And the annual road tax?

In Wallonia and Brussels it only knows fiscal horsepower, calculated from the combustion engine's displacement. Walloon scale from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027: 253.31 euros at 7 hp, 373.16 euros at 9 hp, 432.30 euros at 10 hp.

This is where the Corolla, the more frugal of the two non-plug-in cars, gets caught: 178.99 euros more than the Swift, every year. In Flanders the base amount is adjusted by 0.30% per gram of CO2 above or below 149 g/km, then by Euro standard, which brings the bill closer to real consumption.

Which certificate boxes should you read before signing?

Four are enough. Ask for the certificate of conformity of the exact vehicle, trim and wheels included, before you sign the order form:

  • P.1, displacement: it sets the fiscal horsepower and therefore the annual tax in Wallonia and Brussels;
  • P.2, the combustion engine's power in kW: this, not the combined power, puts the car in a band;
  • P.3, the energy type: in principle it decides the Walloon 0.8 coefficient;
  • V.7, CO2: it matters in Wallonia and decides almost everything in Flanders.
Your situationWhat to do
You live in Flanders and hesitate between a mild and a full hybridCompare CO2 in V.7: every gram above 100 g/km costs a lot at the sixth power
You live in Brussels and count on a plug-in hybrid to pay lessDon't: only combustion power and fiscal horsepower count
You live in Wallonia with a large familyClaim the reduction of up to 250 euros, valid since 1 July 2026
You are buying a mild hybrid in WalloniaCheck box P.3: the 0.8 coefficient only changes the bill if the car exceeds the 50 euro floor
You move to another region after buyingThe registration tax already paid stays paid; the annual tax follows your new address

For choosing the architecture itself, the selection method helps you place your use in the right box, and the ranking of hybrids sold in Belgium lists fiscal horsepower model by model. If the Corolla tempts you, the head-to-head with the Peugeot 308 hybrid sets its 10 hp against the Peugeot's 7.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, in all three regions. None of them exempts hybrids, whether mild, full or plug-in. Wallonia applies a 0.8 coefficient to them, Flanders taxes them on their type-approved CO2, and Brussels makes no difference with a petrol car of the same power.

The combustion engine's power alone, shown in box P.2 of the registration certificate. The combined system power quoted in the brochure is not used. A 140 hp Toyota Corolla is taxed on the 72 kW of its 1.8 engine, not on the output of the hybrid system.

In principle, the coefficient follows the energy type written on the certificate. Some mild hybrids are registered as petrol cars, others as hybrids. Check box P.3 before signing. On a small MHEV it rarely matters: the 50 euro floor often applies either way.

For a new Corolla 1.8 Hybrid registered after 1 July 2026, with 100 g/km and a maximum mass of 1,820 kg, our calculation gives 74.57 euros in Wallonia, 104.16 euros in Flanders and about 158 euros in Brussels. Your exact figures are on your own car's certificate of conformity.

Type-approved CO2 for plug-in hybrids registered since 1 January 2026 is higher, because the calculation now assumes a smaller electric share. For the Walloon and Flemish registration taxes the effect is usually zero: even at 54 g/km a compact plug-in hybrid stays below the floor. The increase mostly shows on company car deductibility.

Not in Wallonia or Brussels: the annual tax depends on fiscal horsepower, hence on the combustion engine's displacement. A 1,580 cc plug-in hybrid pays 373.16 euros a year in Wallonia, like a 1.6 litre petrol car. In Flanders the base amount is adjusted for CO2 and Euro standard, which favours the lowest-emitting hybrids.

On your region's simulator: SPW Finances in Wallonia, MyTax in Brussels, the Vlaamse Belastingdienst simulator in Flanders. Enter the data from the certificate of conformity of the exact vehicle, not from a brochure. Two trim levels of the same model do not always have the same CO2 or the same mass.

Yes, at every change of owner, but reduced by age. In Wallonia the base amount drops to 70% at 3 years, 30% at 10 years, then to a flat 61.50 euros from 15 years. Brussels and Flanders also apply an age-related reduction.
